The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson has today delivered on a key campaign pledge by publishing final planning guidance to strengthen the protection given to the historic views of London’s most iconic landmarks and World Heritage Sites.

The Mayor should change his policies to give councils more ways to protect local shops from big retail developments, a report by the London Assembly says today.

‘Cornered shops’^[1] by the Assembly’s Planning and Housing Committee^[2] documents the drastic decline^[3] of neighbourhood shops^[4] in London, and calls for changes to local, regional and national planning policies – including the Use Classes Order - to offer them more protection.

Caroline Pidgeon, leader of the Liberal Democrat Assembly Group and transport spokesperson, commenting on Transport for London's sudden decision to cancel most weekend closures on the Northern Line during the month of August after their review of required weekend closures said:

"This announcement is great news. The last minute change of mind will free up a lot of people this August and it is especially welcome that there will be no disruption over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
