Olympic Flame set to arrive in UK today

18 May, 2012

Today the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) will transport the Olympic Flame to the UK from Greece for the start of the Olympic Torch Relay – presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. The Olympic Flame will arrive at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Culdrose in Cornwall on board a chartered British Airways A319 aircraft, specially named The Firefly, at approximately 19.25 BST.

News from Caroline Pidgeon - Transport for London are still in denial over Oyster overcharging

Caroline Pidgeon, leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting on new proposals from Transport for London to allow Oyster card users to check their accounts online and to allow Oyster customers to submit refund applications online said:

"These improvements are welcome and indeed long overdue. Last year alone passengers using Oyster Pay As You Go were wrongly charged maximum fares totalling over £66 million.

HRH the Princess Royal receives Olympic Flame at Athens Ceremony

Athens, Greece – In the final part of the Greek leg of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, the Olympic Flame was handed over to the London 2012 delegation, headed by President of the British Olympic Association and LOCOG Board Member, HRH the Princess Royal, in a ceremony at the Panathenaic Stadium.

The handover of the Olympic Flame concluded the 3000km, 8-day relay route around Greece.

Thousands of Londoners in pole position for jobs at Summer Games

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced today that around 12,000 people living in the six east London Olympic boroughs have been offered jobs this summer at the 2012 Games, many of whom are currently unemployed and will be supported into permanent work after their Games role is over.

The call follows a 102% per cent rise in the last year in number of young people out of work for over six months in Tower Hamlets.

Local London Assembly member John Biggs said: “This Mayor and his Conservative government’s policies are failing, not only is Britain back in recession but now we find out that youth and long-term unemployment are rising sharply.”

Mayor and Transport for London seek consultants to join new architecture, design and urbanism procurement panel

Architects and design professionals are invited to apply for membership of a new consultants’ procurement panel which is being set up by the Mayor of London and Transport for London (TfL) to promote quality architecture, public realm, urban regeneration and sustainable development in the capital.

The Architecture, Design and Urbanism Panel will be a joint GLA and TfL panel also open to use by the London boroughs, housing associations and other public sector organisations involved with the built environment in the capital.

Flood Do's & Don'ts
Nearly two million properties are at risk of flooding in England and Wales. You can't prevent flooding but you can prepare for it. The better prepared you are, the better you'll cope with the effects of flooding. Don't wait for a flood to prepare for a flood! Prepare for a Flood....

Do:

Check with the Environment Agency's Floodline 0845 988 1188 whether your property is at risk and local flood warning arrangements for your area.
Keep a list of useful numbers to hand - your council, emergency services, insurance company and Floodline.
Buy sandbags or flood boards to block doors and airbricks - but remember to ensure that there is adequate ventilation. In an emergency make them yourself using old pillow cases, carrier bags or even tights filled with sand or earth.
Make up a Flood Kit, including a torch, blankets, waterproof clothing, wellingtons, a portable radio, first aid kit, rubber gloves and key personal documents. Keep it upstairs if possible.
Find out where to turn off your gas and electricity supplies. If you're not sure, ask the person who checks your meter when they next visit. Mark the tap or switch with a sticker to help you remember.
Talk about possible flooding with your family or those you live with. Consider writing a Flood Plan, and store these notes with your Flood Kit.

Don't:

Underestimate the damage a flood can do. Contact your insurance company to check you have adequate flood buildings and contents cover.
Use electrical equipment. Turn mains off if you can to avoid short circuiting.
